ImageStacker having problems reading TIF files

Post by seigell » Mon Aug 26, 2013 2:09 pm

Using ImageStacker to generate some Perseid Star Trail image stacks, I found that I couldn't get it to read TIF files generated from either Adobe Camera Raw or ACDSee Pro.

In each case, the following error was reported upon opening every TIF file:
G:\Shared Documents\Shared Pictures\My Pictures\2013-08-11_550D\Stuff\IMG_1988.t
if: Warning, unknown field with tag 34665 (0x8769) ignored.
Combining data...

And the result was a generally green TIF with just a couple streaks of hot pixels.

Are you using 16 bit TIFF files? Currently, Image Stacker only works with 8 bit image files.

Yup, 16-bit TIFs.
I've never encountered nor had reason to produce 8-bit TIF source images...

OK, ImageStacker is 8-bit only. I'll be feeding it JPGs, then...

8-bit TIFF files exhibit no JPEG compression artifacts, so if you are in search of the best possible image quality, then they would be a better choice than 8-bit JPEG files as input to Image Stacker.

I do plan to add support for 16 bit TIFF files, but I haven't had the time to do it yet.
